Personal Finance Term

Whole Life Insurance

A life policy that covers you for your entire life rather than a fixed term and builds a guaranteed cash value over time, which you can surrender or borrow against. Premiums are much higher than term cover.

Whole life combines lifelong protection with a savings element โ€” part of each premium funds the death benefit, and part accumulates as cash value that grows over the years. The payout is guaranteed whenever you die, which makes it popular for estate planning and leaving a legacy. The trade-off is cost: for the same sum assured, whole life can cost several times more than term life.

In Malaysia, traditional whole-life policies have largely been overtaken by investment-linked policies (ILPs), but they still suit people who want certainty and a forced-savings discipline. Before buying, compare the guaranteed cash value against simply taking cheaper term cover and investing the difference โ€” for most young families, term plus separate investing delivers more protection per ringgit.
